CV vs Résumé: When to use each

When applying for roles globally, understanding regional terminology and expectations is critical. Using the wrong format is a quick way to get your application tossed out.

North America (USA & Canada)

• The Résumé: This is the standard document for job hunting. It is a concise, highly tailored 1-2 page summary of your relevant experience, skills, and education. It should focus entirely on measurable achievements (the "XYZ" formula).
• The CV (Curriculum Vitae): In North America, a CV is a lengthy, comprehensive document used exclusively in academia, research, and medicine. It details every publication, presentation, and grant. Do not send a 5-page CV to an American tech recruiter.
• Strict Rules: Never include a photo, your age, marital status, or religion. Strict anti-discrimination laws mean recruiters will often reject resumes with this information to avoid liability.

The UK and Europe

• The Terminology: The terms "CV" and "resume" are used interchangeably, but "CV" is far more common.
• The Format: A UK/EU CV is similar to a North American resume but is generally expected to be exactly 2 pages long, providing slightly more detail about your career history and responsibilities.
• Photos & Personal Details:
  • UK & Ireland: Like North America, no photos, no age, no marital status.
  • Mainland Europe (Germany, France, Spain): Traditionally, a professional headshot was expected. However, this is rapidly changing, especially in the tech sector and at multinational companies. When in doubt, omit the photo for tech roles, but include it if applying to traditional local enterprises.

The Rest of the World (Middle East, Asia, Africa)

• The Comprehensive CV: In regions like the UAE or many African markets, longer CVs (3+ pages) detailing all responsibilities are still common. Photos, nationality, date of birth, and marital status are often expected or explicitly requested.

The Golden Rule for Relocating

If you are an African professional applying abroad, adopt the North American Resume standard. A clean, 1-2 page document focusing on impact without a photo or personal details will be accepted and respected in the UK, Europe, and North America.
