Express Entry: How Canadian PR Works

Canada's Express Entry system is a fast-track, points-based immigration system that manages applications for permanent residence under key economic immigration programs. For African professionals, it remains one of the most reliable routes to securing Permanent Residency (PR) before even stepping foot in the country.

The Core Programs

Express Entry manages three main federal programs:

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For workers with foreign work experience. This is the most common route for professionals relocating directly from Africa.
2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For qualified tradespeople.
3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For workers who already have Canadian work experience.

The CRS Score Breakdown

Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is the lifeblood of your application. The highest-ranking candidates in the pool are invited to apply for PR during regular draws. The score evaluates:

• Age: Maximum points are awarded to candidates between 20 and 29. Points decrease significantly after age 30.
• Education Level: A Master's degree or multiple degrees yield higher points. Your foreign degrees must be assessed via an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an approved body like WES.
• Language Proficiency: This is often the easiest area to boost your score. You must take an approved test like the IELTS (General Training) or CELPIP for English. Strong French skills (TEF/TCF) provide massive bonus points.
• Work Experience: Evaluated based on the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. You need at least one year of continuous, paid, skilled work experience (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3).

Category-Based Draws

Recently, Canada introduced category-based draws targeting specific professions facing shortages. If your NOC code falls under Healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), Trades, Transport, or Agriculture, you may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) with a significantly lower CRS score than general draws.

The Process

1. Take Language Tests & Get ECA: This takes 1-3 months.
2. Create Your Profile: Submit your profile to the Express Entry pool and receive your CRS score.
3. Receive an ITA: If your score meets the cut-off in a draw, you get an Invitation to Apply.
4. Submit PR Application: Provide police clearances, medical exams, and proof of funds within 60 days.
5. Get PR: Processing typically takes 6 months.
